Role: Music composer, sound designer and performer
The performance is set in the early 2000s, when bubbling music emerged in the Rotterdam area.
Bubbling music originated from playing existing raggamuffin music at an accelerated speed. This accelerated playback not only results in a higher pitch and tempo but also changes the entire context of the music. Cheerful melodies emerge, rendering the often highly homophobic, inflammatory lyrics almost unintelligible. A greater contrast between the musical experience and the actual message is almost impossible.
I have applied the manipulation of existing music from which the bubbling originated to my own work in order to arrive at new material in the same way. I primarily use electronic melodic percussion and effects.
The performance begins with a mysterious melody played live on electronic melodic percussion. This same melody returns several times later in the performance, accelerated in a club scene and broken up in a love scene. A drill rap composition returns backwards as a cheerful, sweet melody beneath a tragic, violent scene that creates a stark contrast between the event and the music.
The performance Runner was written and performed by Patrick Ribeiro.
In this production for Orkater Newcomers, Patrick creates a mix of acting, spoken word, and rap.
Patrick dedicates himself daily to young people struggling with the issues addressed as the theme of the performance.
